Indrajit Rai, ex-minister Ram Bahadur Thapa’s conflict expert, arrested for issuing fake refugee papers

02 May, Kathmandu: Indrajit Rai, an advisor to former home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, has been arrested on the charge of issuing fake documents to Nepali citizens, identifying them as refugees, to help them go abroad easily.

Rai came to the limelight during the peace process as he identified himself as a conflict expert. It was during the peace process that he came closer to the then-Maoist leader Thapa aka Badal.

A series of reports published by Kantipur recently revealed his involvement in the document forgery, following which the police received an arrest warrant.

Based on the warrant, Rai was arrested in Lalitpur on Tuesday morning, according to SSP Dan Bahadur Karki.

An investigator says Rai received over Rs 50 million from people wishing to go abroad saying he needed to bribe the home minister and secretary.
